Introduction

I chose the phone with a built in camera with video recording capabilities. The history of picture taking and video recording and film has always been of interest to me. I was born in 1964, first born from the youngest. I was the center of attention. The first cameras I remember are the Polaroid and the 35 mm. I also remember the 8mm home movies. My grandparents and parents had more than five children. We celebrated every birthday, holiday, and anniversary. Picture taking and movies were very much a part of my childhood. I have pictures taken with a Polaroid camera older than half the people I know. Remembering to bring a camera, packing and making room for the camera; is why many “Kodak” moments were missed. Today I do not believe there is a moment we can miss.

Surprising to me was the earliest conversation regarding optics and the camera was back in the 5-4th centuries, B.C., with Chinese and Greek philosophers. It was Newton (1664-1666) who discovered that white light was actually composed of different colors. In 1727 it was discovered that silver nitrate darkened when exposed to light. The first photographic image was in 1814; but, it took eight hours to expose and faded soon after. The first image that did not fade and took under thirty minutes was in 1837. Other historical highlights of interest:

• 1840, first American patent issued to A. Wolcott for his camera

• 1841, patents were issued to William H. Talbot or the first negative-positive process making multiple copies possible

• 1843, first published photograph

• 1859, Panoramic camera patented

• 1884, Eastman invents photographic film; 1888 patented for Kodak

• 1900, first mass produced camera – the Brownie

• 1913/14, first 35 mm still camera...
