Reading
The following books are available for purchase from the bookstore. You will need to obtain your books by the start of the semester as work will be due at the end of the first week of classes.
Steven Seidman, The Social Construction of Sexuality. Second edition. (If you are going to order your books on line, make sure you get the second edition as it is quite different from the first edition.)
Michael Kimmel and Rebecca Plante, Sexualities: Identities, Behaviors and Societies
Anthony Giddens, The Transformation of Intimacy.
Arlene Stein, The Stranger Next Door.
In this course we will hold human sexuality up to sociological scrutiny. Sociologists view sexual behavior as social behavior just like other types of behavior. We will look at the history of sexuality, at becoming sexual in America, and at the interaction of sexuality with other social statuses such as gender and race. We will pay special attention to the variety of interpersonal sexual interactions in contemporary America. Some of the material in the class is controversial and you do not have to agree with it. You just have to approach it with an open mind, and to be prepared to defend your positions with evidence.
The course follows the outline below. We will expect you to have completed the readings by the date indicated in the outline....
