Sig M400 User Manual

I have chosen to critique the online user manual from the www.sigsauer.com website. This manual is the owner’s manual for a Sig M400 rifle. This is a rifle that I do own and this assignment will help me understand how this rifle works. For this assignment I will be looking into five criteria to critique the Sig M400 manual. Those five criteria will be organization, style, audience recognition, step-by-step instruction, and graphics.

Organization

The organization of this manual has been well thought out and seems to be reader friendly. This manual includes: State-By-State Warnings, Locking Device, and Table of Contents. However this manual does not include a glossary of terms used within. The organization of the table of contents is separated by numbers for each subheading. Although, there are no text subheadings, each topic is covered by a number for each topic and then a period with another number for each topic related to the first topic. For example:

“1.0 Safety information 14

1.1 Protect your Eyes and Ears 16

1.2Ammuntion 16”

This does seems kind of confusing at first but does keep the content organized to specific topics throughout the manual.

Style

The style of this manual does help the reader to understand the text by adding pictures of the rifle. The use of bold headings allow the reader to understand what they are about to read. The descriptions of all the gun parts do seem to have a lot of detail as to what they function and operation the part is to do. Although the pictures do work well with the description, at times throughout the manual, the description has more detail than the pictures can show. This style of writing can be misleading to readers that are not familiar with this type of weapon.
