Case Study: Don

Assessment:

Don is a 47 year old white divorced male, father of two children ages 16 and 10. His date of birth is 5/23/1966. He reports that he works as a skilled laborer when he is able, but is currently between jobs. He states that his wife left him 10 years ago taking his children with her. He has no contact with any of them. He states that the loss of his children has really hurt him, but that this was all her choice and he had nothing to do with it. He would like to have some sort of relationship with his children. Don reports that due to his unsteady employment he has insufficient income to pay his bills and his credit cards are all maxed out. He states that he can’t pay any of his bills and everything is overdue. He states that everyone has given up on him from his wife and kids to friends that he use to go have drinks with after work.

Don states that he does have one friend named Jack who he was friends with as a child and he recently moved back to town. They started to hang out again. He states that Jack is concerned about Don’s drinking and wants to help him. Don states that Jack told him of FLACCRA and urged him to come in and meet with us. Don reports when asked about his drinking that it started out with just one drink after work with friends. It has turned into hours of drinking years later and the friends are all gone. He states he has tried to cut down and quit, but he gets so sick when he does try it is just not worth it.

During the first assessment, Don was fully coherent, able to answer questions, lucid, and not under the influence. He stated that he had not had anything to drink today, but did last night before he went to bed. When asked if he felt his use of alcohol had or is having any negative consequences, Don stated that it might be causing problems with getting work.
