Effective communication in health care delivery services serves as the way to provide better health care for patients. Today, health care organizations are in the process of changing the way medical records are processed. This paper will explain the advantages and disadvantages of electronic medical records. The technology’s short and long term financial impact on organizations and any technological improvements that could still be made in the future.

Electronic medical records new technology can improve patient outcomes while saving physicians money, culture issues and cost issues have impacted its adoption (What’s Plaguing E-health?, 2007). This will help organizations efficiently move into a new direction and save time when taking care of patients. Advocates of EMR think merging the processes of physicians, nurses, and administrators will enable the new of patients entire medical history (What’s Plaguing E-health?, 2007). Electronic medical records store physician’s reports of examinations, surgical procedures, x-rays, and clinical information. The EMR system can use data bases to suggest medical care for patients. This system provides effective communication between the different sectors of the medical field. Most medical records are still stored on paper, which stops the records from being used to coordinate care, routinely measure quality, or reduce medical errors.

The electronic medical records have several advantages over paper medical records. The storage capability of EMR over paper is increased and last for longer periods of time. Accessibility of information electronically from multi locations to many people at the same time is almost immediate. The records can be continuously updated by different providers which eliminates excessive paperwork (Gurley, 2003).
