1. What is the problem of the case?

The Daily Tribune is one of the influential daily newspapers in eastern Tennessee. Rick Arnord who is the editor of the Daily Tribune has pride which has been recognized for journalistic integrity and balance coverage of issues and events. However times have changed and over the past years advertising department started to gain power in both staff and budget. This change has lead to Rick the editor having conflict with the Freedman the publisher regarding news stories that are critical of major advertisers. Advertising department wants to work together and develop strategies that both present good news coverage and serve to attract more advertisers yet Rick shows firm stance to the primary purpose of a newspaper.

2. What is your solution for the problem?

The problem stems from the conflict within the organization. Such conflict which is defined as an intergroup conflict results from variety of sources. The goal incompatibility of each department interferes with one another department’s achievement of goal. Differentiation which is the differences in cognitive and emotional orientations among managers in different functional department may result in conflict in common values, attitudes and standards of behavior. Also limited resources may also result in conflict. To overcome such conflict within organization enhancement of collaboration may be needed. First example to enhance collaboration is to create integration devices. Bringing together the head of each conflicting departments in joint problem-solving teams is a good way for the representatives to understand each other’s point of view. Second example is to negotiate among conflicting department to participate in the bargaining process which enables the parties to systematically reach a solution.
