Abstract

This paper is going to talk about Functionalism, Gestalt, and Structuralism. You will learn what it mean, give some example of each, comparison by similarities and differences, and how Psychology have a major impact on the world today.

Introduction

To better understand Psychology today, it is helpful to understand how Psychology has evolved since its origin. Psychology has a distinction between learning and performance. Some Psychologist have approached learning from different perspective. This paper will examine different type of perspectives and give you circumstances, whereas you can understand the world of Psychology.

Description

Functionalism-An early approach to Psychology that concentrated on what the mind does, the functions of mental activity, and the role of behavior in allowing people to adapt to their environment (Feldman).

Gestalt-An approach to Psychology that focus on the organization of perception and thinking in a whole sense rather than on the individual elements of perception (Words of Wisdom, LLC, 2012). Max Wertheimer is the originated for Gestalt (Rubinstein, 2007).

Structuralism-Focused on the fundamental elements that form the functions of thinking, consciousness, emotions, and other kinds of mental states and activities (Feldman). Structuralism was defined in 1879 by the German Psychologist Wilhelm Wundt (Rubenstein, 2007).

Examples

Functionalism example-Judicial systems help maintain order and schools teach children. Problem in a single part of society can disrupt the whole. This explains how it shows how Functionalism works hand and hand.

Gestalt example- The therapist does not interpret experiences for the patient. Instead, the therapist and the patient work together to help the patient understand him/herself. This therapy focus on experiencing the present situation rather than talking about what occurred in the past.
