Upon entering Beecher Manor visitors will be pleased to sense wonderful smelling food being prepared. Past experiences were anything but pleasant in these type of facilities. They usually reeked of what some call DEATH! Initially this paper was to reflect interaction with the occupants of this facility, and the men’s group created and run, however as more time was spent there my major mind kicked in and went off in another direction. All the issues brought up in class such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, even the lying of what they were and did before coming to the facility. You could see in their eyes their sense of loss and purpose as they sat in wheelchairs unable to even walk freely without being reined in by the staff back to their chairs to sit and stare at the walls searching your face for recognition of them as a person when you walked past them.

What could be done to give these people purpose when all they felt was abandonment and loss of purpose and how could that be affected? It is not through the staff as their hands are tied buy the institutional rules. The only option is through administration. Buy attracting people who are willing to make changes within these organizations is the only way to challenge the people who must reside there. Encourage computer technology classes so they may learn to Skype and keep in touch with family. Follow family on Facebook. Keep and provide virtual access to those who they have connection with. The loneliness they have for their companion is heart wrenching they sit and wait to pass as one man said” I cry every morning when I wake up” Referring he wishes he was dead. The challenge felt was not to discuss and interpret what was seen and relate it to a book, rather to entice people who care to view this as a possible venue for them to pursue and bring the talents learned in business with the compassion engrained within all of...
