A Case for the Universal Legalisation of Marijuana

It is no secret that marijuana has been responsible for insurmountable pain, suffering and death, yet not because the drug is remotely harmful. Its legalisation has been a controversial debate for the latter part of this century, yet only now are we beginning to see countries tolerating marijuana. So why is this? Only in recent years has scientific knowledge conclusively shown us that marijuana is not quite as bad as we think. Yet even so many people are not keep to accept marijuana. Claims of mental illness and even cancer come from smoking cannabis. I say we must examine the facts, look past any petty or bias arguments, and look at the unimaginable benefits of legalising the plant.

Most advocates of the anti-marijuana campaign are quick to claim that regular use can leave one hindered with mental illness and disease. These however, are old wives tales. The University of San Francisco conducted an experiment in which they scanned the brainwave patterns of 300 regular users of weed. The results; marijuana did nothing to alter the brain, it was proven virtually harmless. Yet people continue not to trust these results. We are standing in the shadow of our own ignorance, is it not time for change? Even if (theoretically speaking) marijuana is harmful to us, why must it be illegal? The government has little problem with cigarettes or alcohol, and despite all their demonizing campaigns I doubt I will ever live to see them made illegal. It is of my opinion that these substances are tolerated simply because they have been around so long. I can practically stretch out my arm and touch a pub in this country, but it’s a proven fact that excessive drinking kills us. I daren’t leave my house without the comfortable poison of a few cigarettes, but I’m fully aware the damage they can do. In short why are we allowed to drink and smoke ourselves to death, yet condemn marijuana for nothing. Yet I dare not be biased....
