Ch. 3- Non-verbal Communication

(Nonverbal Com.- composed of “all those message that people exchange beyond the words themselves”

(Cluster- the grouping of factors (gestures, posture, eye contact, clothing styles, & movement regarded together)

-a person’s background & past patterns of behavior must be considered

-Congruency- the relationship btwn current & past patterns of behavior, as well as the harmony btwn verbal & nonverbal communication

1. Sources of Nonverbal Signs

A. Neurological Programs

-Innate neurological programs: automatic nonverbal reactions to stimuli w/ which we are born

-these nonverbal “automatic reactions” are reflexive b/c of neurological drives

-tied to our need drives

-our expressive faces are part of human nature rather than collective learning

-our eye movements say a lot

-blind and normal sighted people share identical facial expressions & modify their expressions of emotion in the same way in accordance w/ the social context

-according to NLP search, most people will look up for visual accessing, down for linguistic accessing, to the left for past experiences, to the right for future perceptions, & straight ahead for present tense thinking

-NLP experts consider eye movements to be an aid to accessing inner speech since the eye movements stimulate different parts of the brain

B. Cultural and Intercultural Behavior

-reflective of the culture from which they were learned

-culture can affect what is expressed and how it is expressed

-every culture has its own body language & ppl learn the culture’s nonverbal patterns along w/ those of spoken language

-ppl speaking more than 1 verbal language gestures according to the language he or she is speaking

-nonverbal gestures & behaviors convey different messages throughout the world

-Action chain: a behavioral sequence w/ 2 or more participating organisms, in which there are standard steps for reaching a goal
