Preparation for Unit

“In 2008, about 5 percent of Americans aged 12 and over reported nonmedical use of prescription pain reliever within the past year” ( Hart & Ksir, 2011, p. 317). With further research, I feel that I will have factual information about the prevention of teenagers abusing illicit drugs. I will successfully complete a lesson plan that will prevent teenagers from abusing the power of illegal prescription drugs. I would like to focus my area of study on High School Freshmen up to High School Seniors, so this would typically be around the ages 14-18. An average High School Health Class would have up to 25 students; typically, dealing with these many students the teacher-to- student ratio will not be effective, and not every student will be able to discuss their problem that may lead up to an bad addiction.

According to the NSDUH (National Survey on Drug Use and Health) Oregon has the highest rates of nonmedical pain reliever use ranged from 6.4 percent compared to 3.6 percent in Iowa. (The NSDUH Report: State Estimate of Nonmedical Use of Prescription Pain Relievers. (2013, January 8). I think teaching in this area will successfully impact my group of study and the teenagers that are affiliated in this state are aware of how dangerous abusing prescription drugs really are.

For my lesson plan my students will need the following supplies: No. 2 pencils, black ink pens, loose leaf paper and a 5 x 8 poster for the end of semester group project. Throughout the semester I will provide PowerPoints over each chapter and after each section is completed we’ll do an overall lesson activity to see what the students have learned and how this could be applied in the real-world orientation. Also, we will have two guest speakers that come throughout the semester; one will be an chief of police that comes and talk about how he handle teenagers that misuse prescription drugs and where they reside when their parents can’t control their behavior, and the...
