An Introduction to Operations Management

Starting the paper with having a better understanding of what actually, the operations are for any organizations, which need to be managed. Operations are basically the process, method or set of well-defined activities in any practical environment (Galloway, 1993, p.2). From this definition, all the aspects of human activities in an organized and productive atmosphere are covered in a broader spectrum and as per organizational respect; these activities can either be named as operations or functions. The operations for any organization are considered as the key to improvise or sustain its level performance and quality of derivatives. Thus, these operations are strongly required to be managed by the managers and those managerial activities that are carried out in order to deal with the operations of an organization lead to operation management.

In other words, a more formal definition of operations management for any particular industry or institute is, the managerial approach which deals with the structure and management of products, procedures, services and supply chains, and also considers the acquirement, expansion, and exploitation of resources that firms call for delivering the goods and service their esteemed clients yearn for (Galloway, 1993, p.2).

The definition avowed that operations management covers a widespread range of areas in an organizational milieu. It is not only restricted to the basic day-to-day operations, but is far more than that broach. It actually gets the handle from strategic to tactical and then operational levels. These envoy strategic issues are incorporated with 1) having a hunch for the size and location of manufacturing plants, 1) fixing on the structure of services, and 3) conniving technology for the supply chains (What is Operations Management? n.d.).
