Mission Statement
Google – “To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and
useful.” (Google Company Information, 2013)
Yahoo – “To create deeply personal digital experiences and to connect users to what matters most to them.” (Yahoo Company Information, 2014)
Similarities and Differences between the two
Yahoo has defined its mission statement in relevance with connecting with customers. To help bond this change, they have come up with options like flickr and yahoo answers. Yahoo once pioneered the market, is now striving to survive. Its new mission statement also differentiates its path from Google, and emphasizes more on connecting with people. The biggest difference that I see is customer base. Yahoo’s customer is advertiser’s whereas Google’s customer is you and me. This is the reason that draws huge customer base to Google than Yahoo. Yahoo basically started as a search engine in 1994, where it helped people to gathering information from the internet. Having Google as a competitor, Yahoo has gone all-out to stay in the market. Yahoo has outgrown itself to stay in the market by providing new services. Google on the other hand has taken a different approach altogether. They connected people to their search engines rather than each other. Over the years, Google gained its core competency in providing answers to people all over the globe. Google became a resolution, having no substitute. Google differ itself from Yahoo on two critical points; knowledge and information. Where Yahoo facilitates information on the basis of personal association, awareness and understanding; Google acquire information through investigation, data analysis, measurement, etc. Google has excelled in providing lighter, cleaner and simpler interface, which clearly shows how Google takes care of people’s perception and ensure that each and every product is flawless...
