A 4-MAT Review System: Confronting Without Offending: Positive and Practical Steps to Resolving Conflict.

Abstract

Confronting without defending is a very insightful book. Right from the beginning it allowed me to see communication and confrontation in the way the lord sees it. It begins by telling the story of the Tower of Babel. I thought it was extremely interesting how it speaks about God breaking their language up in order for them not to be able to communication. Of course, I have heard this story told in the past, but it did not dawn on me to compare it with communication, instead I thought this must have been the way that different nations and languages had come to be. This proves, different readers, different perspectives. I do want to quote her on page 15, “If you cannot communicate than you cannot build- anything.” (Pegues, 2009, P.15) Simple, yet we as humans continue to get this step in life wrong. Deborah also goes on to break down the type of people we have in society. For instance, the dictator “Do It My Way” (I believe this is me). The reason I believe this is me is because I am the commanding one. As she says, I hold qualities such as, commanding, demanding, directing, ordering, proclaiming, ruling and both our lists can go on. The rest are The Accommodator “Have It Your Way;” The Abdicator “I’ll Run Away;” and The Collaborator “Let’s Find a Way.” By learning these four types of people I was able to look back at the people in and out of my life and categorize them according to my new knowledge.
