Case Study 9.2: An Exploration in Leadership

How is this an example of transformational leadership?

Dr. Cook displays transformational leadership when he took the time to meet with his students regarding their progress. He showed concern and support for them because he realized they were not meeting his goals of the excavation. He shared his experiences with them about the previous digs and goals of what he hoped to accomplish and what the students would accomplish as well. This is important because he pictured the students in his vision when he stated that the students “shared the responsibility for the successful outcome of the venture.” Students were aware of what they were doing but they wanted to know why they were doing it as well since they were unmotivated and tired. Due to the way he approached his students by offering them support, it resulted with the students changing their overall attitude and behavior drastically.

Where are Dr. Cook’s strengths on the Full Range of Leadership model (see Figure 9.2)?

Dr. Cook’s strengths are located towards the end of the Full Range of Leadership model which is the right side which is the effective category. He demonstrated the 4 i’s when he took the time to speak to his students. First, idealized influence was demonstrated because Dr. Cook was idealized by his students because he had ten veteran students return for a second year for the excavation. Due to this, it is implied that he does a good job at influencing his students since they are returning to work with him. He is admired and well respected by them. Second, inspirational motivation was demonstrated by Dr. Cook when he talks to his students about his past experiences such as “highlighted accomplishments.” This inspired and motivated students to do better because they the “shared responsibility for the successful outcome of their venture.” It resulted with the students being motivated by Dr. Cook due to the conversation each of them had with him, that...
