Censorship and the Internet
* Miriam Webster’s definition of obscenity is:
* Disgusting of senses: Repulsive
* Abhorrent to morality or virtue; specifically designed to incite to or depravity.
* Containing or being language regarded as taboo in polite usage <obscene lyrics >
* Repulsive by reason of crass disregard of moral or ethical principles < an obscene use of power >
* So excessive as to be offensive < obscene wealth > < obscene waste >
* Obscenity may take the form of graphics, verbal or content.
* There are things that are considered obscene universally.
* Could you name some examples?
* One reaction to these things is censorship.
* To censor is to scrutinize closely if a certain entity is obscene
* Usually the action taken related to censorship is the banning of such materials.
* Our laws in the Philippines have some provision that of free speech, assembly and press.
* In no way should laws be passed that would prohibit such rights.
* But does the government have the right to regulate information presented in the internet?
* Or can the online community regulate itself?
* The cost that would entail in trying to regulate it is very high.
* Censorship cases have been well publicized, everybody knows about Larry Flint.
* The same basic issues occur with the internet but they have not been dealt with.
* With the introduction of a new media be it the printing press, the television, or the computer, comes a new way of presenting information to the public.
* The internet has brought information to those that could otherwise never had the opportunity to have it.
