Can the TSA Secure Top Flight Performance?

Transportation Security Administration is a federal agency created in November 2001 which main purpose is to protect the travelling public and transportation system. While most travelers appreciate the concern for safety, others also grumble about times they have encountered a TSA employee who was unpleasant or seemed capricious in enforcing rules. The main challenge for the TSA management is to maintain a knowledgeable, well qualified and ethical workforce. Occasionally reports have been claimed that items were stolen from luggage and security agents have cheated on tests of their ability to screen for smuggled weapons. Average claims for the recent year show 1443 claims on 65 million passengers. Fortunately this number is pretty law but still enough to put management into thought for improvement of the security services and professionalism of its employees. For example, Geoff Rabinowitz is a business traveler whose laptop computer disappeared out of his bag during a security check. His concern is not only those items could be missing but what could possibly be put into a traveler’s bag as well. Another big issue is cheating on the security tests. This puts at risk the employee’s competence to recognize anyone carrying such weapons.

The human resources management of TSA put a lot of effort to improve their employee competence and professionalism. The main goal for the management is to replace “the screener” with security officers and develop more career paths for them. By improving training g and adding a performance-based pay the employee’s turnover have been reduced as well the worker’s satisfaction have been conducted. As part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), TSA has set specific goals for individual airports, including goals to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of airport screening, as well as safety targets.
