Introduction
Motivation is giving somebody a reason or incentive to do something. It can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is focused by an awareness or satisfaction in the task itself and usually occurs within the person rather than relying on external force. Extrinsic motivation is from outside the individual. Some common extrinsic motivators are rewards or punishments like evaluations or money, pressure, and threat of reprimand. The key to a team’s success is the motivation of the staff. It is clear that companies need motivation plans that inspire, provide anticipated incentives, and keep the staff involved in the process. A successful leader needs to understand and be able to use the tool that motivates each member of their staff.
Addressing Challenges of Groups and Teams
Leading groups and teams can be a challenge with itself. It takes a fair degree of influence, planning, and motivation to keep the group working together on a common goal. When the group is given a task it is important to have clear objectives and a solid plan of how those objectives will be obtained. Performance, motivation, and satisfaction on the job are factors that are determined by employees and their employers. The employees bring in personal beliefs, morals, education, experience, and values. The employers regulate the information supplied to employees and the employees bring values, education, experience, morals, and personal beliefs. Boosting subordinates’ motivation can enhance performance and satisfaction on the job. “Motivation refers to forces within an individual that account for the level, direction, and persistence of effort expended at work (Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 2007).
