INTRODUCTION

The Community Psychology concept emerges from the community mental health movement in the 1960’s and was part a response to a wide variety of social problems, including poverty, crime, delinquency, unemployment, poor education, mental retardation, welfare inequities and troubles in prisons. In this period new questions were raised regarding social problems and their solutions. According to (Rappaport 2000) community psychology is the study of people in context. Moreover community psychology tends to focus on the strengths of communities, living in diverse conditions. Among the developed connections between community psychology and related disciplines is the link to public health. Community psychology takes a public approach and focuses on prevention and early intervention as means to solve problems in addition to treatment. As conveyed by Last’s definition (cited in Geoffrey Nelson & Isaac Prilleltensky, 1994) public health is the maintenance and improvement of the health of all the people through social actions.

Rappaport (2000) further indicates that, as a scientific approach to disease prevention and the promotion of individual and social well-being, public health services and institutions involved emphasize the prevention of diseases and health needs of the population as a whole.
