RE: My Personal Statement

As a graduate, receiving a degree in from my peers, it seems that the purpose of the past has been accomplished; but the realization quickly sets in, that it has become an obligation to the future.

As a young girl growing up in Pontiac, Michigan, I came from a low income, dysfunctional home. My mother was disabled in a car accident in 1955 that tragically took my sister’s life (she was 29 days old), and crippled my Mother for life. She walked with a cane, as her right side was completely paralyzed prior to my birth in 1959. However, despite my Mother’s disabilities, and while raising not only me, but my older brother as well, my mother demonstrated through the rest of her life, incredible strength and perseverance. I did not realize it while growing up, that she was teaching me, I can accomplish anything, regardless of hardships a person experience, if that person desires to do so.

Over the years, because of my Mother, I have learned that a person’s success is not determined by what is learned in books; but it is determined how that person deals with those obstacles, which will determine who that person will become, and my desire is to be a lawyer. I have learned many lessons and jumped over many obstacles, but the most predominant lesson came from my Mother and because of her I am a strong woman, sure of myself, and confident that I can succeed no matter how many obstacles I must surpass.

I am the first person in my immediate family to attend and graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree and apply to a higher educational forum. I have developed into a woman that I am proud of -thoughtful, determined, compassionate, and have gained a thirst for knowledge, especially for the law. I know that my mother left an indelibly...
