Police Roles and Functions

A policing agency has many different functions. Some of these functions include preventing and controlling behavior and conduct that could pose a possible threat to one’s life or property; this is done by multiple officers within their individual jurisdictions. The policing agencies help others who are in danger of being harmed such as assault, assault with a deadly weapon, murder, etc. Officers are there to create security within communities. A daily and nightly duty of a police officer can include reprimanding those who cannot take care of themselves, and are in need of assistance. These individuals usually are those whom are under the influence, have an addiction, mentally ill, or physically disabled. Police are held on a high pedestal, and are expected to resolve these dangerous conflicts on the streets, help save lives, and help reprehend those who pose a threat to any communities. Taking on these responsibility’s as a peace officer can sometimes become stressful, and too much to handle.

The functions of a policing agency can differ at different levels. These levels include federal, state, and local laws. To help explain the different levels: The federal level can usually be in charge or matters that could have a direct effect on an entire country. What this means is that the federal level is who would handle a situation such as terrorism, and organized crimes, etc. State agencies work differently and are usually in charge of public safety, criminal investigations, and public relations. State agencies help look over local policing agencies, and help solve crimes. The local level agencies are our community police officers. They do a routine community patrol within each jurisdiction, respond to emergency calls, patrol and keep our jails maintained; they provide detention also known as jail to adults and juveniles.
