Work Done By The CDA

The Canadian diabetes association is now the leading diabetes association in Canada. They’ve worked to find a prevention to type 2 diabetes (the more dangerous of the two), and make the life of people with type one diabetes easier. The Canadian diabetes association also works with all three levels of government to make sure diabetes is taken seriously, and that it is treated as a major health issue. Their founder is also one of the co-developer is of insulin.

Research and Development

The association funds many key research programs across Canada. This is achieved by the generous donations that they receive from the public. They are also highly involved in the development of Islet transplantation surgery. Islet cells are located inside the kidney, and are used to secret insulin. Type one diabetes destroys/attacks theses cells, causing your body to be unable to secrete insulin. According to the research, Islets can transplanted from one person to another. Therefore the infected person will receive new Islets to secrete insulin in their body.

The first 7 transplants showed success, the patients were able to maintain normal blood glucose without any insulin injections. However, this procedure is still in the development and won’t be available to the world for another couple of years. Some set backs include death of patients, causing Dr. Shapiro to loose some funding. The good news is that the research is still continuing, even with the set backs.

Money $$$
