Converging global commonalty, Theodore Levitt. True? What does it mean? How do we respond?

Theodore Levitt was recognized as one of the first to emphasize the importance of globalization when he wrote an essay in 1983. He thought that companies who were going to survive must use the whole world as their market. Theodore was convinced that new technology would be the driving force to bringing the world together. Also, Levitt thought that products needed to be standardized, advanced, functional, and low priced to be successful in the world market. Companies who specialized in mass customization would not be able to compete in the world markets, due to higher cost of production.

Levitt’s was right when he predicted that technology would change the way business approach the global market. Technology has become the driving force in our local and global economies. Probably, more than Levitt could have possible imagined. Shipping, communication, production, and the ubiquitous internet have led to business being able to satisfy world markets. The internet has been the most important technological advanced. The internet makes exchanging of ideas, resources, and capital flow smoothly across the world. The impact of technology has made it possible to reach markets, no matter how big or small, across the globe.

Levitt believed that standardization of project was one key to globalization. He didn’t believe in customizing products to fit different regions and cultures. I disagree with this approach. Some products can be standardized throughout the world. Most are simple everyday products like water or sugar. However, the vast difference between cultural preferences around the world makes standardizing all products impossible. In highly developed countries, people prefer new high tech products. While in poorer countries they prefer cheaper more reliable products. Also you have to consider the traditions in different cultures. Mexicans do not eat the same type of foods as...
