1. THE FAMILY

• Why learn about “family”

• Family life is important to the health and welfare of the nation.

• Family Nursing- focuses on the family, believing that the family has such an influence on the individual

• The modern concept of MCN is not limited to assessing individuals or individual circumstances but rather examines them first from a family and community standpoint

• Family centered nursing care considers the strength, vulnerabilities and patterns of families to support families during childbirth and childrearing and to encourage healthy coping mechanisms in families facing a crisis

• How well the family works together and how well it can organize itself against potential threats depend on its structure (who its members are) and its function (the activities or roles the family members carry out).

2. Defining the concept of Family

Art. 149. The family, being the foundation of the nation, is a basic social institution which public policy cherishes and protects. Consequently, family relations are governed by law and no custom, practice or agreement destructive of the family shall be recognized or given effect. (216a, 218a)

Art. 50. Family relations include those:

(1) Between husband and wife;

(2) Between parents and children;

(3) Among brothers and sisters, whether of the full or half-blood. (217a)
