Abstract

There are many unknowns concerning same-sex orientation and its sexual development. In light of the documentation of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) prevalence among same-sex oriented individuals, this paper searches the existing research for evidence of a correlation between CSA and same-sex orientation. A history of research has noted that CSA affects its victims throughout their lifetime with long-term deleterious effects on health and well-being, including depression, borderline personality, posttraumatic stress and dissociative identity disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, early pregnancy, increased risk for adulthood rape, hyper-sexual behavior, STIs, sexual dysfunction, sexually coercive behavior in adulthood, prostitution, early sexual contact, suicide ideation, anxiety and a significant impact on the prediction of negative, high-risk behaviors that can lead to HIV. A 2009 study found that 8% of their participants reported some form of same-sex relationships and that the CSA victims were “significantly more likely than controls to report same-sex sexual partners”. One researcher noted that the male same-sex CSA numbers suggest that it is a pressing social problem. Recent research also shows that there is a higher CSA prevalence among men-who-have-sex-with men (MSM) (20%) and that more than 80% of MSM report severe CSA experiences that involved penetrative sex, and/or use of violence and force. Although most recent research has not proven a definitive correlation; there still exists an undeniable prevalence of CSA among homosexuals that suggests that CSA may be a factor that influences same-sex sexual orientation.
