Organization Structure Essay

Organizations come in many sizes, from small “Mom and Pop” operations to large conglomerates. They may not look the same, but they all have one thing in common; they have structure. The "Mom and Pop" business may not have a Board of Directors or thousands of employees; however, they do need the same kinds of structures as companies that do. Organizational structure enables a business to function on many different levels in order to achieve a common goal. I will be discussing what these structures look like and how specific businesses use them to achieve their goals.

Insight Direct U.S.A. Inc.

Insight Direct U.S.A. Inc. is a subsidiary of Insight Enterprises, Inc. According to Merriam-Webster Incorporated (2014), a subsidiary is “owned or controlled by another company” (subsidiary). Insight Enterprises Inc. is a Fortune 500 company specializing in products and services geared toward IT solutions for business and government entities around the world. Insight Direct U.S.A. Inc. provides IT solutions for business and government entities in North America. Insight Enterprises, Inc. and Insight Direct U.S.A. inc. are structured around a horizontal decentralized organization which functions in a networking capacity. As explained by Bateman and Snell (2011), this organization structure provides a lower level manager the authority to make business decisions for the organization while using independent firms to complete a service or product (Chapter 12). Insight Direct U.S.A. Inc. has branch offices across North America; I worked in the Tampa Branch of the company. At the branch level, there is a VP of Sales and a VP of services. Each VP answers to their respective VP in the Insight Enterprises, Inc organization. Under each VP, there is a manager who oversees the daily operations of each department.
