Systems Development Life Cycle

SDLC stands for Software Development Life Cycle. Essentially, a Software Development Life Cycle is a series of steps, or phases, that provide a model for the development and lifecycle management of an application or software piece. The methodology within the SDLC process can vary across industries and organizations, but standards such as ISO/IEC 12207 represent processes that establish a lifecycle for software, and provide a mode for the development, acquisition, and configuration of software systems (ND, DuPaul)

The SDLC comes with necessary components to create a successful software program with users utilizing all the tools and resources necessary to complete their project. One needs to plan and develop such software with things like including tasks, even time frames, and resources to make up the project scope. With those in hand then the developer has the requirements ready to move forward with the following steps of SDLC. Next the developer can build the framework of the software on the design that he/she envisions with all the resources at hand. Someone cannot have software successfully built without a database of sorts and a guide for them to use and follow for the software completion. Then it moves on to the Testing step, which allows other users to figure out what is wrong and right in the software allowing the developer to take notes for them to use in the Maintenance step. All Maintenance does is allow the developer to fix any errors in the software, which caused problems in the first place. If the developer after the last stage keeps updating the software there should be no future problems and everything will run smoothly.

There are two different types of SDLC that can be used: waterfall and agile. The major difference between these two is the waterfall process is more traditional and begins with a well thought out plan and...
