Assignment: Rehearsal 9.1 Assess the Multiculturalism of Your Organization

1) The organization I work for contains a considerable amount of multiculturalism. The founders of the start-up organization are twenty years old. They promote productivity over desk time. Often, you will see the founders schedule a meeting without a time limit. They have much on their agenda to accomplish, so they schedule meetings and seek only to meet as long as it is needed to resolve an issue, finalize a business plan, etc. The general manager is his forties. He comes from a work environment where desk time was valued greatly. He also worked with people who were close to his age and shared the same work values. When he came to the organization he saw that much of his staff were in their early twenties. He observed and understood the staff before implementing at-work policies. He saw that informal talk among the staff developed group morale within each department and from one department to another.

While it did seem that the staff conversed a lot informally, they were very productive. Instead of instituting a strict formal work environment, the general manager permitted employees to socialize on an informal level. We have a small percentage of staff members who are Muslim. Throughout a work period, they are permitted to stop work for a brief period of time and pray as their religion commands them. The management and staff show their respect by allocating other employees to cover their duties while they are praying and provide a private area in which they can pray. From my observation, the diversity and multiculturalism of the organization is proving to be a productive environment.

2) Provide same-sex partner benefits to those who are in a same-sex partnership as well as partner benefits to those who are in a heterosexual partnership. Allow for time off as needed, so long as the employee completes their job tasks and communicates...
