The mission overview of Homeland Security is to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, ad resilient against terrorism and other hazards. There are three concepts that form the foundation of our national homeland security strategy that is designed to achieve this vision and they are security, resilience, customs and exchange. In turn, these concepts have broad areas of activity that the Quadrennial Homeland Security Review (QHSR) process defines as homeland security missions. These missions are spread all over and are not limited to the Department of Homeland Security. These missions with their goals and objectives tell us in detail what it means to prevent, protect, respond, and to recover, as well as to build in security, to ensure resilience, and facilitate customs and exchange.
People from across the federal government, state, local, tribal, territorial government, the private sector, and other nongovernmental organizations are responsible for executing these missions. These are the people who interact with the public, who are in charge of public safety and security, who own and operates out nation’s critical infrastructures and services, who develop technology and who keep watch, prepare for and respond to emerging threats and disasters. The homeland security professionals must have a clear sense of what it takes to achieve the vision (Janet Napolitano).
There are five homeland security core missions which are 1) prevent terrorism and enhancing security, 2) secure and manage our borders, 3) enforce and administer our immigration laws, 4) safeguard and secure cyberspace and 5) ensure resilience to disasters. This is all in addition to maturing and strengthening the homeland security.
