Decisions in Paradise, Part I

The objective of this paper is to define the issues that are found in the Decisions in Paradise business scenario. This paper will also discuss the forces that are involved in the formulation of the problem that Nik encounters and must ultimately handle on her first work assignment as an Executive Assistant for Starbucks Coffee Company. Finally, the paper will discuss the formulation and tools and techniques that Nik uses to deal with Alex, her boss, who is the director of strategic planning in Kava.

The issues that are found in the business scenario are as plentiful as the challenges faced by the residents of Kava. More than half of the residents are under the age of 15, there is a mix not only of different ethnicities such as South Pacific tribes, Asian, African, French Spanish, and American, but also various religions from indigenous, to Christian, Buddhist, and Islamic, and even more challenging with the numerous languages that are spoken on the island of Kava. Besides the inherent challenges, the island of Kava also faces the potential for many kinds of disasters including: tidal waves, typhoons, fires, earthquakes, HIV/AIDS, and oil spills to name a few. The economy of the island consists of oil, coffee, spices, sugar, fishing, natural gas, bananas, cocoa, and of course tourism.

Upon arriving to Kava, Nik quickly realizes that the island is not exactly the paradise she had previously envisioned, but rather messy in fact. Alex informs Nik that the goal for Starbucks Coffee Company is to develop and manage an effective and well organized process structure for the company. In order for Kava to develop a stronger economy and secure its future, steps must be taken.
