Self-Reflection Paper

With reference to negotiation, I understand myself to be self-aware of my normally quiet and contemplative style of negotiation with others. My perception is that while coming to concessions on an issue with others, I tend to absorb what the other parties bring to the tables and respond accordingly, as to not overstep my bounds or step on anyone’s toes haphazardly. Also, in my eyes, it enables me to recognize a difficult situation before it arises. It's important to listen to the customer and understand what he / she is saying. You need to show empathy and a want to solve the customer's problem, not to appear to have your own agenda, even if you do. Within that train of thought, I was once dealing a customer’s service request when making a quote on their house for a repainting of the exterior. When stating the initial quote, I could tell the individual was hesitant given the price I offered to paint for. After discussing what could be accomplished on his property, I offer to repaint the garage as well at a slightly discounted price in order to “seal the desk.” To get a little you should be prepared to give a little. A reasonable compromise by way of blending the business interests should be the basis of the balanced outcome of the negotiations for your business opportunity. I attribute most of my success to the tolerance and prudence associated with taking the time to fully comprehend the imperatives of the other party and react accordingly based on their specific wants and needs. This quiet and contemplative style has served me well because I have not filled the negotiation time with empty banter, but paid attention to the needs of the customer and utilized critical thinking skills.

However, it is not to be said that communication skills should be absent from a negotiation completely you want your negotiations to yield any positive results you need to develop strong communication skills. They are the intrinsic part of any business...
