COM 114: Persuasive Speech

General Purpose: To inform.

Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about how water pipe smoking is bad for your health.

Introduction

I. Attention Getter: Alice in Wonderland is a Disney classic and I want to begin my presentation with a clip from the 1951 film.

II. Relevance Statement: I will never forget my first time sitting down and inhaling the sweet aroma from my lips with the sound of bubbles emerging. Then outpoured a cloud of smoke with a buzz to go along with it. My first time smoking hookah was my last. It made me sick to my stomach and I never smoked it again. Interested in the topic I decided to research the effects of smoking hookah.

III. Credibility Statement: “Current estimates indicate that 100 million people around the world smoke tobacco from water pipes daily. Since 2000 an estimated 200-300 hookah shops have opened in the U.S., which many are located near college campuses,” According to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners stated in an article labeled “New tobacco trends: Waterpipe (hookah) smoking and implications for healthcare providers”

IV. Thesis Statement: Due to the growth of smoking hookah around college campuses I want to discuss the effects of smoking tobacco and educate why we should not take part in smoking hookah.

Directional Transition: Hookah has been around for hundreds of years and now it’s particularly taking a new direction toward college students.
