7.2 Control
The Conrads currently use clan control to manage Grizzly Bear Lodge. Clan control is a type of control that is “based on the norms, values, shared goals, and trust among group members” (Bateman & Snell, 2013, p. 567). Since the Conrads have decided to expand their business in size and amenities, they will need to incorporate bureaucratic control into their already successful clan control. Bureaucratic control is “the use of rules, regulations, and authority to guide performance” (Bateman & Snell, 2013, p. 567). According to Businessdictionary.com “bureaucratic control is used to ensure efficient operation of large organizations, where face-to-face communication is not possible or practical and informal methods of enforcing compliance may not be sufficient” (2013).
Before the expansions occur, the Conrads could utilize feedforward control and create policies and procedures that will ensure staff members do their jobs correctly (Bateman & Snell, 2013, p. 572). Then, once the expansions are completed and they are open year round, Rudy and Diana could implement concurrent control. This will ensure that employees are doing their jobs correctly and efficiently. This will also allow the Conrads to know what is going on in their restraints and all their other services. Finally, the Conrads could use feedback control after they re-open with their expansions and new amenities. Feedback control is where someone looks at data that was collected and then creates a solution for areas that are not up to par (Bateman & Snell, 2013, p. 573). These three controls will allow the Conrads to create an environment that guarantees guest satisfaction, whether they obtain it in the beginning with feedforward and concurrent control or make adjustments using feedback control.
