Technopreneurship and National Competitiveness

In recent years, the concept of competitiveness has emerged as a new paradigm in economic development. In national context, competitiveness captures the awareness of both the limitations and challenges posed by global competition. Furthermore, national competitiveness, which is said to be particularly important for small open economies, rely on trade and typically foreign direct investment, providing the scale necessary for productivity increases to drive increases in living standards.

Referring to report by World Economic Forum (WEF) and Institute for International Management Development (IMD), national competitiveness is determined through two important factors, growth competitiveness and microeconomic competitiveness. Growth competitiveness is determined through technology, public institution and macro- economic environment.

Sadly happened, Indonesia’s growth competitiveness progressively decreases through years. One of the important reasons for this condition is the weak technological capabilities. Compared to other nations, Indonesia’s growth in technological capabilities has not increased significantly. UNIDO has even found that Indonesia’s high-tech product is only about 18% of all manufactured goods, which means that Indonesia’s manufactured goods are only dominated by low-tech and mid-tech products.

Therefore, it is an importance of technopreneurship. Mastering in technology becomes so important if we could transform the technology competence to become a competitive advantage in business perspective. There is a need of synergy between capability to developing and mastering technology and transforming technology to become a prosperous business. It is becomes an essence of technopreneurship which is a development of technology-business-base.
