The most important values that the team is based on are commitment, trust and accountability.
Each player makes a sincere promise to himself and others to be accountable. As the team grows cohesive with a common goal and shared aspirations, the mutual accountability grows as a natural counterpart. This runs through the length of the movie, especially from the second half. In the movie, this team value reinforces the time, energy and action invested in affirming the goal and chalking out the best strategies.
As the players work towards a common goal and objective to defeat the invincible Soviets, trust and commitment follow. They enjoy a strong common purpose of life and hold themselves responsible, both individually and as a team for the team’s performance. The commitment and trust within the team spawns from the feeling of representing their nation in the Olympics and from the feeling of holding the nation’s pride high. This is reinforced when Herb urges the team to listen to the crowd chanting “USA” in the Olympics final after Johnson scores a goal and ties up with the Soviet Union team.
The strong commitment of the team to the common goal of winning the trophy for their country and bringing honor for their country, integrates their individual skills and serves as a powerful vehicle to meet the team’s challenge. This sense of mutual accountability, trust and commitment leads them to their ultimate and unthinkable success.
There are some social norms that are enforced on the team right from the beginning.
One of them is to stand up for each other. When the team members see one person being on the receiving end of the Coach’s rebuke – example - when one player is hurt and the coach demeans him, then another stands up for his cause.
