AFFIRMITIVE

“We’ve got to do a better job of getting across that America is freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise, and freedom is special and rare. It’s fragile, it needs production.”

Because I believe in the words of Ronald Reagan, I must affirm the resolution. US foreign policy ought to be guided by American Exceptionalism.

C: American Exceptionalism

Before we begin this debate, I would like to give the following definitions in its classic forms:

Foreign policy is a diplomatic policy governing international relations with other nations.

Ought is an auxiliary verb used to express duty or moral obligation. Something that should be done.

Guided: to exert control or influence over another.

American Exceptionalism refers to the special character of the United States as a uniquely free nation based on democratic ideals and personal liberty.

C1: The United States uses its influences for the benefits of other countries.

The US is a unique country that was formed over 200 years ago and due to the wisdom of our founding fathers and the Constitution, we are blessed. It is this belief in liberty and democracy that has brought us prosperity and greatness. The powers the government wields uphold the dominant figure America has built which in return affect the other nations in a positive manner. In other words, we are a country of a benevolent hegemony. One in which other nations look up to us for guidance and ideas.

As a benevolent global hegemony, the US foreign policy is not to provide an outlet for our own sentiments of hope or indignation; it is to shape real events in a real world and should be to preserve and enhance that predominance by strengthening America’s security, supporting friends, advancing our interests, and standing up for its principles around the world.
