1. Distinguish between operant conditioning, observational learning, and social learning. How are these different kinds of learning utilized in the work place? Give specific examples for each one.

• Operant conditioning is the type of learning that is reflexive with voluntary behavior. For example: If there is a bee flying around your head trying to land on you, you will swat at the bee to try to get it to go away.

• Observational learning is when you learn by watching someone else perform a task. For example: When you are a new employee at your company, you will have someone there that will train you to do your job. Typically they will show you everything the first couple of days and then they will let you start doing things on your own.

• Social learning is a combination of cognitive and behavioral learning. Bandura was the first one to integrate these two theories and came up with the four requirements for learning (observation, retention, reproduction and motivation) Example: If you are at work you will see how some co-workers treat their managers and tend to get away with bad behavior. If you have any of those people training new people, the new people will learn that it is ok to treat their managers bad.

2. How is prejudice developed and nurtured through classical and operant conditioning? Give specific examples that demonstrate each kind of learning.

• Prejudice is a learned, generally negative attitude directed toward a specific group of people only because of their membership in an identified group. Prejudice is developed and nurtured through classical and operant conditioning from three elements which are:

• Affective ( emotions about the group),

• Behavioral (negative actions toward member of the group) and,

• Cognitive (stereotypical beliefs about team members).
