Observing the Wireless Spectrum

Introduction

The point to this lab is to learn how to use a common spectrum analyzer. It is important to know how to use an analyzer for wireless network solutions. Knowing how to interpret the information an analyzer gives will allow any network technician the information on equipment and antenna placement as well as potential interference areas during the wireless LAN design.

1. Capture 1: Are any channels being used that overlap other channels?

All the channels 1-13 are overlapping each other

2. Capture 1: If you had to install a new wireless LAN, what channel would you use?

I would use channel 14 because the traffic is low and it is not overlapping any of the other channels

3. Capture 2: What channels are being used?

All the channels are being used 1-13 and overlapping as stated in question 1

4. Capture 2: What channel is being used the most?

To me it looks like channel 11 is being used the most

5. Capture 3: What type of signal is being shown?

The type of channel being shown is HyperX RFID reader

6. Capture 3: What frequency, not channel, is being used?

The frequency being used is 2450

7. Capture 4: What type of signal is being shown and how strong in dBms is it?

The signal being shown is 802.11g and the dBms is -60 to -50 strong

Conclusion

In this iLab this week, I lean who to use and interpret the information from a spectrum analyzer. It is important to know how to read and determine what information to use. Using the information properly will result in deploying a proper wireless LAN. Knowing the proper location for the AP and antenna can determine how much area is covered or dead zones. I definably feel that I could use the information properly going into the future.
