Business Model and Strategic Plan, Part I

Mount Carmel Health is a major hospital in Columbus, Ohio that treats everything from cancer to women’s health, but their psychiatric department is missing something that can save lives and help people live successful lives while combating mental illness and substance abuse. Currently, Mount Carmel Health has a psychiatric department that treats patients for a short time and then refers them to behavioral health specialists after treatment is completed. Instead of referring patients elsewhere, Mount Carmel Health can start a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) that will help those with substance abuse and mental illness.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, generalized anxiety disorder affects about 3.1 percent American adults age 18 or older in a given year (National Institute of Mental Health, 2014). Regarding mood disorders, including bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, approximately 20.9 million American adults or 9.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 or older in a given year suffer from a mood disorder (The Kim Foundation, 2014). Unfortunately, very little is being done to minimize the stigma of mental illness in adults. Mental illness is extremely prevalent in this country but so many people are afraid to speak out and get help. In order to combat this problem, it is vital that those suffering from mental illness speak out and get the proper help they deserve. This paper will introduce a partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient program to Mount Carmel Health network and will identify the company’s mission statement.
