Lido "Lee" Iacocca was born October 15th, 1924 to Italian immigrants in Allentown Pennsylvania. His father Nicola first came to America to earn money as a cobbler before returning to Italy to bring over his mother. It was during this trip when he met Antoinette and the two shortly married thereafter. On the voyage back to America, Antoinette became ill with typhoid fever and almost returned to Italy. Nicola opened Yocca’s Hot Dogs in Allentown which was sufficient enough to get the family through the depression. Nicola also started one of the first rental car agencies U-Drive-It, which helped fuel Lee's passion for automobiles. At age ten to make extra money for his family, Lee would use his wagon to take home groceries for customers and at age sixteen he was working sixteen hours a day at a fruit market. The Great Depression taught Iacocca to prepare for the worst and not waste materials or time. It was these experience’s that gave Iacocca the motivation to do well in life.
In grade school Iacocca was treated poorly because of his Italian heritage. Also, his two best friends faced greater adversity due to being Jewish. The three boys were at the top of their class, but few people acknowledged that because of their heritage. This treatment stayed with Iacocca and he made sure to recognize people's abilities, skills and completeness not their nationality or race. Later in life Iacocca hired Gerald Greenwald to be Vice Chairman at Chrysler, the first Jewish person to hold such a high position at any of the big...
