You are to write a one page paper comparing and contrasting the four basic ethical philosophies with your personal ethical philosophy

My Christian upbringing formed the basis of my ethical philosophy in every regard; in terms of knowing what is morally right and wrong, how I should treat with others and their property, what my moral views are on abortion and animal rights etc. I had no previous knowledge of these ethical philosophies; however each were interesting and may relate in one way or other to my personal ethical philosophy.

Meta-ethics which is believed to be the “least precisely defined area of moral philosophy” analyses the origin and meaning of ethical concepts. This philosophy questions what does right even mean or where it comes from. While this appears to be evasive and leaves the interpretation of ethical terms (e.g. right and wrong) to one’s ethical origin; meta-ethics to me then has to do with my source or what defines right, which is the Bible. This will inevitably differ from someone else's, whose origin of ethical terms comes from a different source. Normative ethics on the other hand inspects standards to determine what is right or wrong. It also differs from meta-ethics in that it seeks to answer such questions as “What should one do?” thus beckoning to how one should act morally speaking. Normative ethics also draws on one’s virtues such as integrity and fairness etc. My ethical philosophy relates closely to normative ethics and in some ways applied ethics. In the former, the litmus test is basically to do unto others what you will have them do to you and the latter has to do with our personal application of moral knowledge. This beckons me to apply what I have learnt and to take a stand when it comes to certain moral issues, such as abortion, that may not have a universal ruling.
