The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) describes itself as "the world's largest technical professional society -- promoting the development and application of electrotechnology and allied sciences for the benefit of humanity, the advancement of the profession, and the well-being of our members." (Rouse, 2011) The IEEE is a non-profit organization and the world’s best specialized committee for the advancement of technology. The IEEE Standards Association creates committees called Working Groups to create and write the standards. On behalf of each standard a working group is established develop and implement this standard. An example of one of the standards IEEE has established a working group for is IEEE 802.11.
The IEEE 802.11 is a standards working group on wireless local area networks. The IEEE 802.11 provides a wireless connection that is cost saving as oppose to having to have a physical connection to a network. A physical connect in a traditional Ethernet network requires cabling. In today’s society having wireless technology is a requirement for any business to be successful. Wireless connect not only allows businesses to have access to information but also allows the everyday consumers the access to perform everyday business. Wi-Fi protection Access protocol (WPA) is used to secure wireless transmissions. WPA allows for not just business but the everyday user to use mobile devices to securely communicate over the Internet. WPA allows mobile users to travel to different locations allowing them the ability to have access to meetings and emails. This wireless technology allows users the freedom of not having to be restricted to a physical connection to a network.
