The star of Macy's is magic
Everyone knows the department store Macy’s in one form or another. Whether an individual has shopped there, had been an employee or seen the Thanksgiving Day Parade on television the word Macy’s has been uttered in every household around the world. Achieving this type of status has relied heavily on innovation, and branding of a legacy.
“In 1858, R.H. Macy's first store opened on the corner of 14th Street and Sixth Avenue in New York” (Brown 2009). With his vision and the little red star tattoo on his hand an empire was born. As a sailor R.H. Macy used the constellations of stars to guide his way through the dark seas. Believing that people should have a wonderful experience at his store, the retail industry will be forever changed by his insight. Using this foundation throughout history has allowed Macy’s to grow and prosper to one of the largest United States corporations on the Fortune 500 list year after year. Relying heavily on their heritage has brought forth the slogan, “Way to shop!”
Many concepts have changed over the 150 year history of Macy’s. Many mergers, acquisitions, changes in leadership, bankruptcies, but ever evolving is the “Magic of Macy’s”. Changing with new technology and brands has resulted in many changes in the stores. These changes have taken place is the local markets, store windows, and employee communication. This is translated into 150 years of experience resulting in imaginable results.
Imagine the store managers each morning meeting with the entire staff to discuss the work of the day, special promotions, and of course goals. This was limited to the employees coming to work first thing in the morning. Not to mention a bit crowded standing at the bottom of the escalator broadcasting your voice to the employees above.
