Innovation in Agriculture

The world’s developed nations are beginning to face a crisis regarding food shortages. Rising costs of butter, milk, eggs and all other foods are putting a strain on increasing populations. An even worse reality is that the food supply of Third World nations is on a steady downward curve even with huge efforts to correct this travesty. Food shortages in poorer nations are causing slower development, riots, illness, and death. The answer to global food shortages may be innovation in production.

The purpose of this report is not to convince the reader to adopt better eating habits or to choose healthier food; this report’s goal is to examine food production and suggest methods of food production innovation that will create more food and higher profits. The report will critically analyze how the agriculture industry innovates.

The report will focus on different techniques to create more food and less waste. The report will have controversial topics like Genetically Modified Organisms. The purpose of the report will be to explain innovation in the industry, not to convince the reader which option is healthier and better for society.

Examining Global Food Production

Many of the staple foods in the world are grown in very large areas in only a certain number of countries. Wheat for example is primarily grown in the developed world. Canada is the 7th largest producer and China is now the largest (Which Country, 2014). Rice is predominately grown in South East Asia. Thailand is the world’s largest exporter, followed by Viet Nam and Cambodia. Rice is also grown in India and South America. Other staples such as bean and animal proteins are produced and exported in large amounts by the developed world. United States is the world’s top producer of food for export.
