The Structure of Cells

Purpose:

The purpose of this lab was to look at various plant and animal cells and to label the various parts as well as understanding their function.

Procedure:

Each cell type will require specific instructions.

-Draw what you see in the microscope for each cell using white unlined paper.

-Each slide should be wet mount

* Onion cell- Peel a thin layer of tissue from the inside of an onion slice. Stain the tissue with Iodine. Draw and label- cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, nuclear membrane.

* Potato Cell- Using a razor blade, cut the thinnest possible piece of potato. Then use Iodine as a stain. Draw and label- cell wall, cell membrane, leucoplasts

* Algae- Remove a small amount of algae from the pond water. Put a drop of water onto the slide then place the algae onto the water. Place the cover slide over the algae. Draw and Label- cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, chloroplasts

* Human cheek cell- using the broad end of a flat toothpick, gently scrape the inside of your cheek. Then stain it with Iodine. Draw and label- cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, nuclear membrane

Draw and label each in as much detail as possible

Questions:

1. The difference between cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems is that cells make up tissues and tissues make up organs. A group of cells that perform a certain function are tissues. Groups of tissues are what make up organs. Organs that work together are known as organ systems.

2. Organelles are similar to organs but much smaller and they are located inside of cells while organs are inside of animals.

3.

4. The Er, Mitochondria, and Ribosomes are hard to see because they require a higher magnification than those used in class.

5. Chloroplasts were only found in the Elodea cells because the other cells we looked at were root plants therefore they do not photosynthesize.

6. Cheek cells have...
