Background of the Course: In recent decade, increased globalization, uses of modern information technology and outsourcing have increased the complexity of distribution systems of companies. Managing such complex operations effectively is becoming more and more challenging and this calls for increased importance of the concept of Supply Chain Management continuously. While the conventional concept of distribution talks more about the transaction-based interactions among different functions, the term “Supply Chain Management” talks more about the integration among various functional departments. In Peter Drucker's (1998) new management paradigms, this concept of business relationships extends beyond traditional enterprise boundaries and seeks to organize entire business processes throughout a value chain of multiple companies. Supply chain management has emerged as the new key to productivity and competitiveness of manufacturing and service enterprises. The importance of this area is shown by a significant spurt in research in the last five years and also proliferation of supply chain solutions and supply chain companies. All major ERP companies are now offering supply chain solutions as a major extended feature of their ERP packages. Objectives of the Course: The present course aims to equip managers and practitioners with the concept and practices of Supply Chain Management which will help them deliver corporate success through a more efficient coordination with their suppliers, and customers.
