Abstract

In today’s environments it is not enough for companies to make a profit. They’re expected to make a profit by doing business the correct, ethical way. Business ethics is defined as the rules or standards governing the conduct of the individuals within an organization, as well as the organization itself. Ethical business behavior is demonstrated through equitable, fair and just dealings with organizational stakeholders; whether customers, employees, or investors. (Daft, 2010) Although ethical business behavior can be flexible and customized depending on the situation and the shareholders interest; generally all ethical behavior conforms to self-imposed standards of moral character and public conduct.

Introduction

Ramona Alexander was a highly touted graduate of Liberty University’s MBA program when she was recruited by Next Step Herbal Health. Next Step was recently featured in Forbes magazine and was touted as one of the fastest growing companies in America when Ramona received the invitation for a weeklong “get to know us” event at their headquarters.

Before her visit, Ramona decided to do some research about this company. Most of the articles were in favor of Next Step and of the way that they ran their business. But, there were also articles which were not so favorable towards Next Step. Included in this were article’s which talked about Next Step contributing to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. As with any large corporations, there will always be a mix-bag of reviews; however some of these articles should make Ramona think seriously about her future, and to research this company further.

Ramona was given the full treatment at the event to include gifts, and the promise of making “Big bucks”. Ramona asked many good questions, and had reservations about the answers that she received. Farrell (2008) said”an organizations...
