LAN Design

In teams of 3 or 4, analyze the LAN design scenario below and formulate a written report based on the requirements included in this document.

Be sure to use as many relevant concepts from the course as possible, and be sure to include research sources beyond the course text.

LAN Design Scenario:

You and your team members are employed by an information technology consulting firm named XYZ Technologies. Your company is competing for a network design job from Cooper Design Incorporated. In order to win the bid, you and your team must write a convincing network design proposal that will put you ahead of the competition.

Cooper Design Inc. is a fast growing, venture capital funded, creative design startup-company. The company has already outgrown its original office space and in-house network. They are now moving into a new 3-story office building and have submitted a request for proposal (RFP) for a new network for their new facility. Cooper Design Inc. has the following requirements:

• 300 new Windows client computers (fast processor, at least 4GB RAM, at least 500GB HDD)

• 100 new Windows laptops (fast processor, at least 4GB RAM, at least 500GB HDD, WLAN)

• 2 qty. new 24inch displays per workstation (not required for laptops)

• This is new construction, so all new network cabling is required – Building dimensions are 100ft x 300ft per floor.

• High-speed internet access accessible by all users.

• Enough bandwidth to move large media files between workstations and file servers

• CDI will be using their existing server/storage infrastructure – 15 servers with 4 qty. gigabit copper interfaces per server.

• The network will need to span all 3 floors of the new office building. There is a dedicated wiring closet on each floor, and a server room on the 2nd floor.
