Labor Unions go to Battle in the Political Arena

Whether you consider yourself a democrat, republican, or independent, one thing holds true for all of them: politics are critical to everyone. It proves to be no different when it comes to the labor unions of the United States. Though the vast majority of unions are based on the democratic viewpoint, the basis for the political argument isn’t the party it represents; the overall activity in the political process is vital for union survival. The inclusion of electoral politics and the political arena has demonstrated multiple advantages in the union setting. Legislature, progressive cases, and studies have proven the necessity of unions and politics and their relationship between another. Labor unions have taken action in the past to help shape the present. The passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act, Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, and healthcare coverage plans are a few examples of the results hard work from politics in the labor union setting has achieved. Molding the environment that the unions operate within is crucial for their attainments. The birth of labor unions is in part to help each individual’s voice be heard, by establishing power in numbers. Although the unit does gain strength when banning together, the corporations the unions stand under still have a resilient voice of their own when it comes to their power. The struggle between big corporations and the American worker is even more prevalent today with the number of unions diminishing over the past decade. Decreased membership weakens the union’s expression and ability to fight against actions the corporations can make to crush the union.
