Schools Implementing Bullying Awareness Programs

We all know that bullying in schools, whether it be face-to-face bullying or cyber bullying, can be absolutely traumatic to our children. Schools should implement bullying awareness programs as either part of the curriculum or as monthly type, school wide meetings. Implementing these types of programs to our children could reduce the amount of bullying dramatically. These programs will also help students realize the impact that bullying has on people, especially if they acted out different scenarios and had victims speak. The amount of bullying related, student suicides may also reduce dramatically. There are so many benefits to these bully awareness programs.

The amount of bullying in schools has increased dramatically. We send our children to school and expect them to be safe from all harm at all possible moments. If bullying can be prevented or reduced by having awareness programs, why would we not try it? “A structured curriculum that provides youth with materials over at least several sessions and includes: detailed information on how to implement each lesson, lesson materials, specific text for presenters, and procedures for training teachers and other presenters. One-shot assemblies or pulling a few bits and pieces from a program is not going to make a difference for your youth.” (Jones) Bullying awareness should be in the school’s curriculum that should be a requirement for everyone to take. Sure, it is extra tax dollars for us but our children’s safety and health should be our number one priority. Each child’s parent should, in some way, be involved with this type of programs. After all, it does start at home, our children learn from what they see. How many times have we publicly downed someone to a friend or out loud to ourselves with our children right there?
